Campaign for A Fair Hearing

Application Copy: To Be Signed and Returned.

The Campaign for A Fair Hearing

Application for Membership/Renewal

The Aims of the Campaign

To hasten the day when any person or group can expect a fair hearing, whether in a court of law or the court of public opinion; to encourage constitutional reform; to widen public debate.

Duration of Agreement

Member Organisations may terminate their participation via written request at any time. Alterations to printed material will be made as soon as practicable.

Eligibility

Any campaign, voluntary organisation, charity, cooperative, political group, religious organisation, trade union, professional association, business, local authority or other body consistent with the aims of the campaign is eligible for Membership.

Conditions of Membership

Member Organisations will endorse the Initiative for Equality & Justice:

  • To obtain the benefits of democracy and law for ourselves and posterity, we call for the abolition of the office of Lord Chancellor and the establishment of elected constitutional and constituency courts of review.
  • Member Organisations will support the right of every other Member to a fair hearing, but Membership in itself will not constitute an endorsement by the Campaign or any of its Members.

Joining Fee & Contributions

No joining fee is required. Contributions to specific projects, i.e., publishing an advertisement, may be solicited, but are voluntary.

Activities

All activities are optional. Campaign activities and materials will be consistent with the aims of the Campaign.

Administration

The Adviser to Action for Justice (pressure group for ministerial accountability), Suzon Forscey-Moore, shall be the unsalaried Organiser in charge of administration, delegating responsibility as the need and opportunity arises.

Reports

The Organiser is answerable to the Members but the provision of formal published reports shall be made at her discretion.

Authorised Expenditures

Documented standard expenses (advertisements, postage, printing, telephone, travel and other standard campaigning costs) shall be deemed authorised. The Campaign's sole bank account will be with Lloyd's Bank, Sidney Street, Cambridge.

Accountability

The Organiser welcomes comments, suggestions and criticism and any Member Organisation may request a written response to a complaint. Member Organisations will periodically receive a contact list of other Members. The Organiser does not "own" the Campaign, but is accountable to the Members who are free to reorganise at any time.

Charities, please note: Peter Burnell, Senior Lecturer in Politics and Director of Graduate Studies in Politics & International Studies at the University of Warwick wrote in the Oxford Concise Dictionary of Politics (OUP, Oxford 1996):

In UK law political objects are not charitable, and so political parties and institutions which exist in order to influence government policy on particular issues (i.e., "pressure groups") cannot normally be regarded as charitable. However, a charity may conduct reasonable advocacy of causes which directly further its objects and which are ancillary to the achievement of those objects [emphasis added].

Charitable status should not therefore be jeopardised by membership of the Campaign.

Please print clearly. Signing the Application constitutes an endorsement of the Campaign's aims and the Initiative for Equality & Justice. Send this completed Application to A Fair Hearing, PO Box 54, Cambridge CB5 8BB or, alternatively, fax it to 01223 327042.
