BMA............5.6.99 Recent reports and guidelines leave me very disturbed. Dr Wilks debate on BBC Newsnight with SOS-NHS in particular. My own wife is seriously and chronically ill. 3 years ago feeding was withdrawn and no efforts were made to keep her nourished. Even worse the matter was never discussed by doctors with me and it proved extremely difficult to find a doctor to discuss it. My wife is unable to speak so it is not even possible for other people to discuss things properly with her! This does not give confidence in (all) doctors. There were many related problems in actions/lack of consultation. For many years I have been her full-time Carer and only contact with the world, being able to understand her and having her complete confidence. I AM TOTALLY OPPOSED TO DOCTORS HAVING THE POWER WITHIN NEW OR ANY GUIDELINES TO DECIDE TO WITHDRAW FEEDING OR BRING ABOUT DEATH IN ANY WAY THAT IS NOT THE CLEAR AND UNDISPUTED WISH OF THE PATIENT. AND IN THE EVENT THAT THE PATIENT CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR NEXT OF KIN/CARER. I do however support voluntary euthanasia where the patient themself is able to express a very clear and unequivocal wish that their own life be terminated due to the nature of their illness. Sincerely,
|
