Who Is Spying on The Oxford Handbook Comment to BMJ article
CHEATING
AT MEDICAL SCHOOL I am sure there are limits to truth and honesty that are defined by the medical profession ! Medical school is where accountability for ones actions must begin. As a previous student of University College London not so long ago I will state that we knew of cheating that occurred at long cases during finals. We would also hear of multiple choice question papers being stolen to provide to the following years. It has not been unknown for answers to be passed in yearly exams from one student to another. There are instances where notes have been passed in long cases so that an assortment of cases and answers are passed to fellow students . Identical cases are used and so with the right connections a student may pass with limited knowledge whilst the rest of us had to burn the midnight oil . This the Oxford Handbook is the most infamous book passed to students by their friends whilst clerking exam patients. No one monitors your long case and rumour has it that the books have been used whilst noone is looking. " I looked the case up in the book and the viva was easy " said one friend at Huntley St after she had passed," You should have been in Mr X group, he knew one of the registrars at the Whittington who gave him the cases that Prof decided to use." Cheating is common practice in medical school due to the pressures placed on students or sheer dishonesty. Our year attempted to make this known to the Deans e.g. multiple choice papers being passed around disadvantaging people who did not have the "right " contacts. Nothing came of it . My opinion is that University College London has been too lenient on drug intake by students , have ignored the fact that disadvantaged students suffer needlessly and furthermore have turned a blind eye a number of times to the cheating that occurs time and time again over many years. As with most medical schools, a good pedigree will get you a lenient sentence . The BMJ is to be congratulated for the stand against cheating at medical schools because this practice of dishonesty penetrates into mainstream medicine only because medical school provides no deterrent . One hopes that these problems are solved by University College London which otherwise offers a high standard of medical teaching. The whistleblower in this instance is to be congratulated but a word of warning for him, whistleblowing is not to be taken lightly in future as it will cause detriment to his career . From personal experience University College London does not support whistleblowers and therefore the gentleman or lady should be weary that his/her identity is not provided to the faculty ! Honesty, integrity and the medical profession ? There may have always been a missing link !
