THE TOY BOY AND THE BURGUNDY CAR BY ANDREW LEVY What can I say ? Well maybe I should get in a time machine and become a preclinical medical student ! The problem with medical students is the lack of interesting material that is not only capable of keeping us awake in lectures and after a hard night at the Union , one that will stimulate thought . They say that the top ten percent are chosen then locked in a university to be subjected to lectures where facts are presented in the most uninteresting way . This book is alive like Saturday Night Fever with sparks and colour following through every corner . After a day of making paper aeroplanes in lecture theatres this book is definitely the best part of medicine I have come across . The titles of the cases such as The Man who got in to the bath and couldn't get out brings out fits of humour and wakes the reader up . The ideal book for clinical exams for those who have woken up late and not too keen on Hitlerish wardrounds . I wasn't sure about the pictures though , the facial expressions didn't really say much about the patient . The CD ROM is wonderful idea and perhaps it needs to flow slightly better but it gives the reader a millennium approach which is fascinating and stimulating to every sense . This is a refreshing idea with everything a medical student needs to be practical and analytical . It is both funny and intellectual which is a very difficult combination to come by . This book teaches and makes the reader think . This book combines the picture test books with the much needed theory required to pass clinical exams . It definitely is a much needed book and is centuries overdue . The author I feel has achieved his stated purpose and that is to educate the medical student as well as holding his or her interest in a subject . Everything is too expensive for a medical student and therefore it is of reasonable price and worth at least £ 30 as it is a book that is timeless . I am only aware of competitors such at the MRCP stage e.g. MRCP Short cases by Ryder . At the medical student stage this is a long awaited book and its truly a gem . They say a substantial number of students become General Practitioners i.e. a jack of all trades which is what medicine is about in real life . This is the format the book takes i.e. it makes the reader feel like the doctor in the surgery and many patients who breeze through the door and present with a range of problems from facial weakness to fevers . It is very important to a doctor to be able to think on ones feet and be independent as a practitioner and I feel this book enables a fresh new approach to problems solving . Problem solving is one of the most important talents that a doctor needs to have and too often medical curriculum lack this . I think the book is unlikely to date , I feel it could be revamped every year to add new problems that may emerge e.g. AIDS cases or dealing with disturbed patients on the ward and maybe breaking bad news . These are examples of topics that maybe added. I feel with the right advertisement this book will sell in mass quantities . I wish the author the best of luck because he has come up with a brilliant idea which has been long awaited . Dr Rita Pal
