Letter to Lord Morris

Private and Confidential
URGENT ATTENTION

Lord Morris of Manchester
House of Lords
London

Dear Lord Morris,

RE: Sunday times 2nd April 2000

Further to the debates concerning my dossier presented at the GMC, I would like to state that I have been victimised and threatened due to my stand for the elderly.

I have reported all details to the police in Sutton Coldfield recorded at Police Log 881 which includes hatemails from the medical profession, threats, my car bumper ripped etc. I have sent an additional email to Mr Paul Marsden should this fax not reach you. This contains additional information.

I wish to apologise for the delay in the GMC investigation, which probably would have been blamed, on myself. What they will not have told you is that a GMC Committee member threatened me in a phonecall prior to my Human Rights Protest 2000 held outside the Department of Health. In addition they have failed to go through my dossier and investigate the details I have provided them with e.g. patient notes, doctors etc. All they have done is read the dossier and hired a NHS Executive solicitor firm to represent patients whom I doubt is impartial! There has been no formal investigation. I have made these concerns known to the GMC.

The GMC did not protect me in 1998 during the initial complaint and threats to my registration and they will not do so now. Under the circumstances and recent evidence of efforts to prevent my freedom of expression, my decision has been to withdraw my compliance with the complaint because I do not have any confidence in their ability to deal with this and will not tolerate being victimised by their members . I have provided a copy to the Department of Health and the Prime Minister who did not reply to my initial letter regarding my concerns in October 1999.

I have reason to believe that the medical profession wishes to discredit me in any way they can. The past and the fact that they have shunned me from the profession have evidenced this. A recent phonecall to myself which I have taped evidence of implied that I may be on a list for " subversive behaviour ". I do not know if this is true but given the past events, I suspect it is not impossible.

I have received no support from the BMA or the MPS both of whom failed to inform the authorities of the elderly abuse (information similar to the dossier was provided to them in 1998) . My references were slandered and I have lost the faith in medicine. I have seen the " closing of ranks " at the cost of lives and I do not wish to be part of that.

Subsequent to my public stand for patient rights, my career in law has suffered as my views have not been well received and have been considered an attack on the establishment. I cannot afford to be a barrister at the present time nor am I welcome in the profession hence my alternative is to either leave this country to pursue a different avenue again.

All I have said is the truth. My interest has been only for the elderly who are victims in the NHS today. The Public Interest Disclosure Act provided me with no protection. Mine are not allegations; they are the TRUTH of what I have witnessed. It is the establishment who wishes to discredit me that doubt my word and my reasons for taking the actions I did.

I have fought alone and made a stand that no other doctor would have done. I have been punished for this time and time again. I have been victimised and abused and my rights as a human being have been violated. I live in fear of what the powers that be will do next.

I would like to take this opportunity to explain that I wish to bow out of the public arena and be given the opportunity to rebuild my life, which has been destroyed.

I have done my duty as a doctor and a person to what I believe to be true. I have obeyed the Hippocratic Oath and furthermore I hope those who are in high places will stop criticising the reasons for my actions. My reason was simply to protect my patients which is what I was trained to do and it is the reason I became a doctor. I will not practice in this country because I will not be party to what is the killing of many vulnerable people unnecessarily due to underfunding and shortstaffing. This is hidden by the need to preserve reputations and self worth , all of which are not important, if it is at the cost of a person's life.

I hope you will take the time to read this letter and ensure that my family and myself are not threatened further. I wish to be left to lead a normal life and to rebuild the destruction that has been caused by the establishment protecting its reputation at the cost of my life and myself.

Whistleblowers have no protection and I am an example of that. The price has been a high one, I have paid it. I have paid it because I have been left alone to flounder by a medical profession that should be ashamed of their collusion with the death of so many people. I have received no support from the government or any other avenue. I have yet continued to lead the Human Rights Protest on the 26th June 2000 and fought for those who have needed my support previously.

I hope you will ensure that the elderly are protected now and in the future. I have provided the GMC with adequate information of everything I can remember. I therefore feel it is up to them and the Department of Health to do what is required. I will not be subjected to further victimisation.

Thankyou for debating the issue in the House of Lords. I am indebted to you and I wish you the best of luck in protecting the pensioners and the disabled of this country from discrimination and practices by doctors who play God.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Rita Pal BSc MBBS
