NHS Tayside - Uncovering the Cover-Up By By Joyce Duncan
(Aug 15th 2009)
In February 2005, I made a complaint to NHS Tayside about the treatment my father received from his General Practitioner. My father was aged 89 at the time.
The GP in question is no stranger to publicity: as a political animal he is frequently in the news.

Papworth
NHS Trust - Certified Dead
(Nov 2nd 2007)
Certified Dead was written for a GCSE Exam. It was
a real life narrative written from the eyes of a 14-year-old child
who found her grand father dead in an acute cardiac ward at Papworth
NHS Trust. The nursing staff had not noticed that their patient
had been dead in his bed for a fairly long period as evidenced by
the nature of the cloudiness in the dead man’s eyes. Papworth
NHS Trust has stated that this lack of monitoring is acceptable
in an acute cardiac unit for a seriously ill patient awaiting theatre.

The General Medical council has today demonstrated,
yet again, that it is incapable of adequately carrying out its statutory
duty to regulate the medical profession.
In considering a complaint against Professor Rod
Griffiths, former Regional Director of Public Health in the West
Midlands, the GMC’s case examiners acknowledged that Professor
Griffiths’ behaviour had been inappropriate in several ways.

Robbie Powell - Updated 2009
By Will Powell
(March 3rd 2009)
Robbie Powell died at the age of ten on the 17th April 1990 of a treatable condition called Addison's disease which, unknown to his parents, had been suspected four months before his death, when he had been an inpatient at Morriston Hospital, Swansea. The ACTH test to confirm the diagnosis was ordered by the hospital consultant [Dr William Raymond Forbes] but not performed. Addison's disease invariably results in death without treatment; however, if treated, the patient can live a full and normal life. The hospital informed Robbie's GPs of the suspicion of Addison's disease, by letter, and requested immediate referral if the child had a recurrence of, amongst other things, vomiting and/or abdominal pain. ...

Top Doc in Locum Slur Outrage
By Rachel Martin
(June 20th 2004)
Fury gripped the UK's locum doctor community this week after a prominent senior medic described locums as having no friends, a family life in tatters and never having a proper relationship with anybody. The comments, made by Dr Umesh Prabhu, have provoked a storm of protest. One senior locum consultant, who asked not to be named but is happily married with several children and an extensive social circle, said they were "absolutely furious" after reading Dr Prabhu's remarks in the 3rd June 2004 issue of Hospital Doctor....
STIGMA - A Wrong Diagnosis of Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy
(Sept 21st 2008)
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy or MSBP is a diagnosis given to a mother or care giver to describe aspects of their behaviour. This behaviour usually includes subjecting [what appears to be] a previously healthy child to unnecessary and often painful tests or medical interventions i.e. scans, x-rays and even surgical procedures to gain attention from the medical profession.
With an accusation of MSBP comes suspicion, stigma, prejudice and discrimination. I was accused of MSBP in late 1999 and my children were both put on the "at risk register" by Social Services in early 2000. I remember the first case conference as if it was yesterday. I was alone and taken into a room...

The
Polemics Surrounding the Diagnosis and Management of Hypothyroidism
By Diana Holmes (Feb 8th 2008)
The diagnosis and management of hypothyroidism (DMH)
is most certainly problematical inasmuch that it is a highly controversial
issue. This has been the cause of much contention over the decades,
none more so than today. Clinical practice for (DMH) is seriously
flawed. Misleading information with regard to the interpretation
of the ‘reference interval’ and sole reliance on thyroid
function test results play a significant role in undetected hypothyroidism
on a global scale. Indeed this issue needs to be addressed urgently.

In Stitches - An Introduction
By Dr Nick Edwards. (Nov 9th 2007)
My name is Dr Nick Edwards and I am a doctor working
in accident and emergency. I have worked in the NHS for the last
6 years in hospitals up and down the country. I have spent most
of this time searching for a word for the feeling you get when you
are screaming with frustration on the inside but aren't allowed
to express your emotions on the outside. The result is that you
end up smiling inanely because that is how I have felt for the last
6 years. ...

Who
cares about the patients?
By Amanda Steane. (Oct 26th 2007)
Statistics give little real insight into the human
disaster that is going on in our health service. Behind these appalling
statistics are tens of thousands of family tragedies. My forty year
old husband Paul was admitted to the George Eliot hospital in Nuneaton
with stomach pains. Over the course of the next year, he suffered
kidney failure three times in two different hospitals as a result
of not being given enough water to drink...

cases like hers. The GMC having caused a vilification of the doctor
by the press releases and media coverage, her defence union now
tells the doctor that she cannot publicise the fact she was cleared.
