A Carer's Experience of Medical Neglect Dear All, My name is Iain Robertson Stewart, of 202 Copland Road, Ibrox, Glasgow, and in response to Dr., Pal's invitation by e-mail, I am writing to her site. I have already sent to Dr., Pal, copies of all of the web site which I have created and to which I am presently putting the final touches before I arrange the upload to the web. I am at present a student on a Web Design course and I decided to create the site as my first project. Rather than an all singing/dancing site with fancy effects, it is just solid reading material, but it expresses that which I experienced as a carer for my Mother for years, and is also a reflection of similar case histories of the trials that carers suffer in the UK and no doubt elsewhere. I was a member of Carers National Association for a few years prior to my Mum's death and also Alzheimer's Scotland for a year. In various articles in those Charities magazines, which I have kept, I read of carers similar troubles and I recall one notable article by John Harvey Jones (ex ICI Chairman), in the CNA magazine which is in praise of carers, and which points out society's and Doctor's shortcomings. I hope that my contributed experiences, which I muse over in hindsight, can be of use to present carers and help them to realise that their backs need not be against the wall. The professionals so often, as I have said in my site, are not in touch with the reality of the carer's world. For all of their failings, I know that the good Doctors are there, because in my Mother's GP Case notes, there is a letter from a Hospital Consultant to the Surgery referring to our meeting with him, and stating that he believed he had answered our questions, and that he considered that there had been a problem created due to the lack of proper communication on the part of medical people on our previous Outpatient's visits. So, I would say to present carers, do not take no for any answer, and set aside the mentality of that particular type of medical professional who considers that you have no right to be knowledgeable on medical matters. As a carer, you must be so, and you must forever remember that that knowledge is empowering to you in the position that you hold. The answers to any questions that you are bound to have will be found on the NET if you are having trouble in getting them from normal surgery/hospital channels, and sites such as NHS-Exposed.com and Medicalneglect.co.UK are two of them. Of course, there are the search engines such as Google., etc-it is all there. For myself in the future, I am trying to make a new life, and the present Web Design course is hopefully a step in that direction, and an addition to the already acquired Scottish Vocational Qualifications Level 2 in Word, Excel and Access, plus the European Computer Driving Licence which I acquired at Cardonald College, Glasgow last year. I am looking forward to getting the site up and running, and possibly hearing from carers around the world. There will be further postings to this site as details arise. Take Care.
