MMC Supremo in Shock GMC Probe Professor Alan Crockard, the prominent neurosurgeon who presided over the Department of Health’s Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) fiasco, has been reported to the General Medical Council according to an article in the Daily Telegraph.. The new MMC scheme, and its online application system, the Medical Training and Application Service (MTAS), have led to chaos, leaving thousands of junior doctors stranded in employment limbo. Now, Professor Crockard, the national director of the scheme dubbed Mangling Medical Careers, must face an official investigation into his conduct in managing and implementing the controversial programme. According to the informative MMC36 blog, Professor Corckard resigned from his post shortly after the complaint was made. Click here to read the complaint in full (MS Word format). The legendary Dr Crippen, of nhsblogdoc fame, has been following the MMC debacle for some time. It is a great pity that the concerns raised there, and by thousands of junior doctors, over a period of many months, went unheeded until this hair-brained scheme collapsed in a storm of protest and media humiliation for both Professor Crockard and the Department of Health. The Health Minister, Lord Hunt, tried in vain to rescue the British Government’s position, and avoid further shame, in the fascinating TV interview show below. As you will see, he failed miserably, and was further humiliated by incisive comments from Dr Tim Nedas, one of the many junior doctors affected by this latest round of poorly (if at all) thought through changes to the NHS Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt put on a similarly unconvincing performance in this C4 Dispatches documentary. Intriguingly, Professor Crockard – known to NHS Exposed as Old Crockchops – is also no stranger to public performance, having played a dwarf in a University of London Medical School production of Snow White in the 1980s. As yet, we have been unable to confirm the rumour that he played Dopey, although we suspect that he might now be a very Grumpy Doc indeed. If any readers have any further information on Professor Crockard’s thespianic background, please let us know.
