Some of the names have been mentioned and the parts they played briefly in the Chapter One, but to set the scene more fully these are the main players in the Facts behind the Myth and are those who appear as the defendants in the claim brought by Dr Colman and lodged in the Queens Bench Division of the High Court in London. A copy of this claim is found here.

As the facts were pieced together by and experienced counsel and solicitors acting for Dr Colman it became apparent that there had been a conspiracy at work at two periods of time some years apart which involved the same issues and also involving a number of people acting together and drawing others into the plot with the sole aim of preventing Dr Colman from qualifying as a doctor, preventing her from retaining her pre-registration with the GMC and later holding up her full registration and then refusing to employ her even when she was fully registered.

Counsel for Dr Colman said that there are two kinds of conspiracy, the gunpowder plot conspiracy where people sit around and actively conspire to cause injury and the more insidious conspiracy where people get drawn in and the plot develops and grows sucking more people in as it progresses. However the aim is the same which is to cause injury to the person who is the focus of the plot. This is what has happened here and the earlier matters of the 1980s are raked up and replayed out to a wider audience in the 2000s, but with the same intention to injure Dr Colman thus finishing what was begun earlier. The web of conspiracy is spectacularly illustrated by the Flow Chart at the end of this chapter.

Who are these persons?

Mr Finlay McMillan Scott is the Registrar/Chief Executive of the General Medical Council.

Miss Isabel Nibet, who was formerly the Director of Fitness to Practise at the GMC and later became Director of Policy. She now functions at the QCA as their Director of Regulation and Standards.

Professor Sir Graeme Catto was formerly an appointed GMC council member becoming its president on 1st February 2002, a position he retains to the present day.

Dr Paul Diggory is a consultant geriatrician at May Day Hospital Croydon.

Miss Wendy Franks is married to Paul Diggory and is a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Hospital London.

Dr Elizabeth Harris previously known as Dr Anne Brown was the District Medical Officer of Great Yarmouth and Waveney District Health Authority at the time Dr Colman spent her first six months of her working life as a doctor in training at James Paget Hospital.

Professor Thomas Sherwood was the Dean of Cambridge Clinical School and referred to by his students as "Smiling Death"- we know no more. Lord Walton was the President of the GMC between 1983-89 and also had responsibility for screening allegations of professional misconduct.

Robert Gray was formerly an assistant/deputy registrar with the GMC until 1988, having graduated from Cambridge with a First, he previously worked in the East African colonies dispensing summary justice to the indigenous population. His moment of fame was giving evidence at the Shipman Inquiry in Latin, which Doctor magazine described as the low point for the GMC.

The General Medical Council needs no introduction but for the avoidance of doubt it is described as a body corporate established by Statute with public functions and statutory duties regulating the medical profession. It is also a charity. Some doctors prefer to refer to it affectionately, or not, as "the Ghastly Medical Charity".
